Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme designed to protect organisations against common cyber attacks. It focuses on five practical control areas: firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection. The aim is not to make a business immune from every threat. It is to show that sensible protections are in place against many routine attacks.
Why businesses get Cyber Essentials certified
Some organisations need Cyber Essentials to bid for UK government contracts or meet a customer requirement. Others use it to strengthen supplier assurance, support insurance discussions and give buyers a clear sign that basic cyber hygiene is taken seriously. The certificate can help with commercial conversations, but the larger benefit is finding and fixing avoidable weaknesses.
Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus
Cyber Essentials uses a verified self-assessment. Your organisation answers questions about the five controls and the answers are reviewed through an authorised certification body. Cyber Essentials Plusi covers the same controls but adds an independent technical assessment to check that they are working in practice.
What the certification covers
The scope normally includes the people, devices, networks and cloud services that can access your organisation's data and services. Getting the scope right matters because unclear ownership, unsupported software or forgotten devices can delay the assessment. A readiness review helps establish what is included before the formal process begins.
How Pentesys Foundation helps
Foundation turns the scheme requirements into a practical plan. Pentesys helps define the scope, identify gaps, explain the required changes and organise evidence. Formal certification is then completed through an authorised certification body. This separation keeps the preparation useful and the certification process clear.
