Modern penetration testing should create decisions, not just findings

The Pentesys position on scoping, human expertise and evidence-led outcomes from a modern penetration test.

OUR POSITIONA penetration test has succeeded when the organisation can make better risk decisions and prove that important fixes work—not when the report contains the longest list of findings.

A penetration test has succeeded when the organisation can make better risk decisions and prove that important fixes work—not when the report contains the longest list of findings.

01

Scope around the question

Testing should start with what the organisation needs to learn: whether a release is safe, whether an exposed service can be compromised or whether controls protect a critical workflow. Asset lists matter, but purpose produces a better test.

02

Use automation for breadth

Automation is valuable for repeatable checks and rapid coverage. Skilled testers add hypothesis, creativity and context: they challenge business logic, chain apparently modest weaknesses and understand when a result matters.

03

Make evidence usable

Every material finding should explain the route, consequence and practical remediation. Validate keeps evidence, ownership and retesting connected so the report becomes the beginning of improvement rather than its end.
